It’s time for the second World Cup of VGC, a showcase of the world’s best Pokémon players in a six week tournament. Modeled after Smogon’s World Cup of Pokemon, and inspired by Zach Droegkamp’s idea, we are continuing our yearly World Cup with 16 different regions represented. The regions will be mostly the same as last year, but with a few small changes.

    What is the World Cup?
The World Cup of VGC is designed to be an annual, post-Worlds tournament to showcase the best of the best in each country; putting not only individual pride on the line but putting your whole country’s pride at stake. It is a 16 region tournament, with 8 active playing slots per week and 12 total roster spots allotted.

The formats played will consist of 4 VGC 2017 spots, 2 VGC 2016, 1 VGC 2015, and 1 VGC 2014 per week. Matches will be played on Pokemon Showdown for ease of viewership unless players have a capture card. The goal is to have some regular streaming slots chosen each week, and to get a reliable and regular streaming schedule to make it easier to know when you can get your VGC fix each week! Each week, we will also pick the best games and re-stream them to you with a team of experienced commentators analysing every move!

    How can I get involved?
The Managers that have been selected are free to choose any method of player selection that they want: some may host tournaments, some might just choose whichever players they think to be strongest, and some may host tryouts. Get in contact with your Captains to find out what they have in mind!

When is the World Cup happening?
World Cup of VGC will be starting a week after the World Championships conclude, on August 28th. There will be 3 Weeks of round robin pools play between teams, and the top two teams from each pool will move on to the eight team single elimination bracket phase. The tournament is going to be short, but jam-packed with amazing games from the World’s best players. We will also be streaming the draw for the group stages on Friday 25th August, at 22:00 UTC. We’ll talk about each team’s chances and guide you through the World Cup coverage to come.
